Devika Das and her love for books and theatre

Recently, I read two books by the author, Devika Das, and thought of having a Q/A session with her after getting inspired by her work.
I'm sharing all her answers below. Have a look at them :)

My Interview:

1. When did you realize that you wanted to be a writer?

Devika: I did not want to become one. It happened by chance. While waiting for the school bus, I wrote a poem which got published in Hindustan Times, Jaipur. It encouraged me to write.

2. How much time does it take for you to write a book?Devika: Not more than a year

3. One of the qualities you learned from writing? Devika: Patience. Often, you do not have the clarity of how you should compose a poem/story. So, wait for the right time to come.

4. Where did you get the inspiration for writing such a book?Devika: I have always observed how people behave in general. Nowadays, I am observing how with each day passing, people are becoming less humane and there are trust issues. It bothers me when someone cannot vent out their emotions openly. It makes me wonder why people are so fake today.

 5. What do you like to do when you're not writing? As in, what are your hobbies?
Devika: I am an active theatre artiste so I watch/act in plays. I am a great fan of crime fiction. So, when I have spare time you will find me reading a collection of short stories or crime fiction. I prefer to stay at home, my recent interest is finding creative and economical ways of decorating my home.

6. When did you write your first book? What was the inspiration behind it?
Devika: 7 Vows of Marriage. Marriage as an institution is a great concept but it is not easy to sustain. I have expressed my personal views on marriage and how I view it as a beautiful concept.

7. Your favorite author?Devika: Agatha Christie – I can read her novels several times.

8. What do you think makes a good story?Devika: The plot and the storytelling skills of an author

9. Any suggestions for the budding writers?
Devika: Be honest with what you are writing. Often, you are scared whether your manuscript will be marketable or well-accepted by the audience. Shun those worries, but yes, I would say please do not compromise with language skills – ensure to hire a good editor.

 10. Was writing your initial goal?
Devika: No. I had multiple goals – Corporate career, actor, writer, poet, entrepreneur etc.

This was it for my Interview.
